Jackson Bear!

Today we were itching to get out of the house and we know we want to start running errands, etc...so we did a 'trial run' to my parents!  It went very well, and our little man was so very good.  It was nice to get out of the house - in fact, on the way home we had to stop at Walmart to get diapers - and I got to run in!  Who would have thought that would be so exciting!!!  It was!  Hopefully our Costco run tomorrow goes smoothly as well!

While at my parents, I took some photos of Jackson - and I couldn't choose which ones to post, because I'm a crazy mother and love them ALL!!  Hopefully you will all enjoy some of them as much as I do!

(This one is my favorite!!!)

Daddy's Time!

SMILE!!
Nodding...
OUT COLD!

Trevor took these adorably cute photos this afternoon!  He and Jackson were relaxing on the couch after a feeding and Jackson was oozing the smiles!  Trev caught one, before our little man tuckered out and nodded off!  I could just stare at him forever!

For all those who have inquired - we are home now!  Thank you!  We got home Friday evening and have just been taking some time to enjoy each other and settle in (again!).  I wanted to send a BIG THANK YOU out to the Stollery Nurses - they were so fabulous and made our experience amazing considering we were in a hospital!  They are so genuinely sweet, concerned, and helpful.  We are all truly blessed to live in a city with such a specialized and unique facility as the Stollery Children's Hospital.

Quick Update

Well, thanks for all those who have been checking in!  The Stollery is a wonderful Hospital, and the nursing staff is unreal.  The experience there so far has far surpassed any of our experiences at the Misericordia over the past week.  Jackson is doing well.  He is still eating and peeing and pooping like a machine - which is good for the jaundice - and because he's doing so good - he didn't need to get an IV (YAY!).  He has also put on weight, which was a nice surprise!  The doctors and nurses are very happy with how he examines and how well he has been doing.  In fact, when Trevor and I got there yesterday, he was missing!  The lights and bed and blankets were there - but not our baby!  We asked - and it turned out one of the nurses 'stole' him for some snuggles at feeding time.  We were told he quickly became the favorite baby on the unit with his blue eyes and snuggly self...we weren't surprised - but we did steal our baby back!!!  What a flirt already!

Yesterday's test showed improvement in the jaundice, but they wanted to keep him one more night.  They will be rechecking his levels this morning - but were pretty confident we could take him home around noon - so we are wishing and hoping.  Last night I stayed at home with Kia and Trevor stayed at the hospital with Jackson.  It sucked all being apart - but we could only have one person stay - and Trevor is far more adaptable to sleeping anywhere - so our decision was to have him there and me here.  My mom will be picking me up shortly to go be with my boys!  I can't wait to see them!

Here is our little glow worm...I LOVE HIM!

Again, thank you all for the support and offers of help.  It's very comforting to know we can reach out when we need to...

No Sleep + Stress = A Painful Experience

Well, last night we probably experienced the worst of it so far.  I am STILL on hold with the hospital and was checking email - so I thought I would fill everyone in.  Yesterday we went to the Stollery at about 3:30  pm.  Lets just say we got home at 3:30 am without our baby.

It was a very long hard experience.  We were up and down a lot.  We were asked by our health nurse to take him to check him in for some phototherapy for his jaundice and it was made to seem like we were just checking him in and it was all very routine and scheduled.  This was so far from the case.  In the morning the health nurse was in our home and took blood and sent it to Grey Nuns...it still came back high, so apparently all the arrangements were made....Nope.

We went assuming this...and it was so far from the truth.  We had to sit in the emergency waiting room for 3 hours and were in the bed at the ER for 8 1/2 hours.  I can't explain how exhausted both physically and emotionally we all are.  He was poked and proded every way possible as they tried to get an IV and blood.  One minute it was we could take him home, the next minute it was he had to stay.  Finally at 3:00 am we were 'admitted' and he was taken up to a room.  It was a very nice room and the nurse was very sweet.  Because we were told that you were only aloud to stay if you were exclusively breastfeeding, we weren't prepared for this.  It turned out one of us could have...so we felt a huge guilt in both leaving.  It was hard because we had Kia at home and I had none of my medication and I am not able to drive yet...

We weren't prepared for any of the experience (via formula, diapers, etc.) as I am a new 'stupid' mom and we were thinking it was a drop and go experience.  I will never ever be under prepared again...a lesson to us all I suppose.  It really was all just so stressful!

When we went to leave, the parking ticket machine wouldn't work and the arms wouldn't let us out...so we had to sit there and get security to come...not what you want at 3:30 in the morning.  We both found our way to our bed around 4 am and are now waiting to hear on Jackson's results and getting ready to go visit our strong, handsome, loving, oh-so-good little man.  He was INCREDIBLE throughout all of it and I was so proud and amazed at how adaptable he was and good.  I didn't know the heart could grow to love in such a deep rooted way...

We will keep all of you posted on his results and when we get to bring him home...again!  Thank you to all of you who offered to help and who have been checking in.  It is nice to know that he is already so welcomed and loved by so many great people.

The New Grandma & Grandpa

Special time with Kia, so she knows she is loved too!

My parents are pretty fantastic (and by pretty I mean VERY!) - and long before Jackson was born, they were already fantastic grandparents too!  They were able to stop by the night Jackson came home and brought us dinner and helped settle us in.  It's nice to have the support.  But more importantly, I love to watch them with him!  I think that the bond between a grandparent and grandchild is so special and and excited to see how this one unfolds!

Thanks for the flowers, the visits, the support, the help and the love...it is greatly appreciated!

Trevor's first post.........
Amongst all the exciting times we are experiencing in our life lately tonight while the little man was having a feed I finally figured out how to post videos from the camera Uncle Lee and Aunty Lesley gave us for Christmas.

Jackson was a sleeper in the hospital, but we were able to catch this bright and bushy moment...he is so strong - lifting his head and looking around.  Hope you enjoy those blue eyes as much as we do!

SURPRISE! WE HAVE A NEW ADDITION!!

Well, as most have heard, we are proud and excited to introduce...

JACKSON RYAN ACKERMAN
8 pounds, 15 ounces
DOB:  May 21, 2010
11:15 pm

Jackson came and met us early via C-Section after two days of stalled labouring!  He was allowed to come home today - so long as we feed and feed and feed him.  He is on the cusp of having jaundice...but all in all is very healthy!  We are lucky and fortunate and incredibly in LOVE!  I can't help myself from kissing those cheeks and lips.

I have photos and videos to post from the hospital but chose to quickly post some 'coming home' shots!

He is a blessing.  We are both very tired and need to give our new little man a bath - so I will say good night for now.   We appreciate all the warm wishes and love we've received over the past few days.  Don't forget you can make the photos bigger by clicking on them - and who wouldn't want to make those photos bigger!?!?!

STAY TUNED FOR MORE!

It's Official - Our dog has a ROUGH Life!

Kia has had this realization that pillows are fantastic lately.  Probably for the past two months she has been a total pillow hog.  She's pretty cute...I'm not sure she quite understands just how good she really has it!  Before going to bed last night, I went to look for her to tell her it was bed time and say good night...and this is what I found!

Apparently, she thought it was time for bed far before I did!!

Playtime in the Sun!

Like I mentioned, Kia and I had some fun playing frisbee in the backyard yesterday!  Some of our trees were starting to leaf, and we even have our first flower!  It's exciting to see everything bloom because we had the landscaping done right when winter hit last year, so we didn't get to see it much...

This is both Trevor and my favorite tree.  We love the golden color of the bark.  Can't remember what it's called - but wish we planted more of them!

Our first flower!!

She got tired of playing and went and laid in the shade...I think she likes the yard...more room to run!

Happy and tired!  Just the way I like her!  She slept all night!

So because I did so many updates in such a short amount of time, some of them were bumped to the next page...so if you are catching yourselves up...don't forget to click on "older posts" at the end of the site to catch the rest of the updates!  Serves me right for procrastinating!

Trevor's Birthday Picture

So my cousin Caitlin and I attempted to take some maternity shots a while back...and then it rained.  lol.  We got a couple shots in and that was about it.  This one was my favorite and for Trevor's birthday I made a collage of it with some of the ultrasound and belly pics and framed it for him to take up to work with him.  On the collage, it says Happy Birthday Daddy!

Oh how time is ticking!

Acupuncture

So, unlike our prenatal classes, the ones my doula took talked about a variety of methods that can assist in preparation for labour!  Luckily, I get to reap the benefits of her learnings as she shared with me the information she learned about Acupuncture...and how beneficial it has been!  I have done my share of reading (although I don't find a lot) and decided to go ahead with the Pre-Birth Treatment mixed with some symptom relief acupuncture.  I was very scared as I HATE needles and was very nervous going in to this!  All in all, it was pain free, interesting, and well worth the experience!

The guy I saw was AWESOME and we had great conversation and he was very gentle and knowledgable.  He specializes in this area and I didn't doubt him once - which was comforting.  All the needles were in my legs (from the knee down) which was interesting!  I was worried they were going to start in my face!

The most interesting part of the experience for me was that near the end of the appointment we were talking about C-sections and I was sharing that the only reason I was worried about it was because of my hernias.  He replied by saying that the last two needles inserted were on nerves associated with the hernias as they felt tender...that was so COOL to me!  He didn't even know about them yet, and was on top of it.  It was incidents such as that which made me realize how much our body is connected on so many levels and how "western" medicine doesn't always know everything.  We talked a lot about Western vs. Eastern medicine, and what I like about him is he is educated and experienced in both and uses both in the practice.  Not a hard-head at all.

Anywhos...that was treatment #1!!  Quick and Painless!  Next one is booked for next Saturday!  He asked for me to bring my doula and/or husband to teach them accupressure techniques to use during labor!  I can't believe how close we are getting...

I posted some info from the website below!

Acupuncture is an effective way to promote natural healing and improvement of body functioning by inserting fine needles into specific stimulation points on the body.  The practice of acupuncture can be ideal during pregnancy as it offers women a drug-free alternative to managing their health and well-being.

Prenatal Acupuncture; prenatal acupuncture treatments can aid women in taking a hands on role in managing their pregnancy. Acupuncture can be used to ease morning sickness, cramping, back, neck and shoulder pain, effectively and without the use of drugs.  Additionally, regular treatments can help naturally prepare the body for childbirth, shortening labour, reducing the use of medical interventions, and reducing anxiety over the birthing process.  For more information see the Prebirth treatment below.

Pre-Birth Treatment; Pre-birth acupuncture treatments are designed to prepare women for the most efficient labour possible and are offered as a series of treatments in the final weeks of pregnancy.

Pre-birth treatments for pregnant women from weeks 36 on have been shown in research to reduce the duration of labour in first time pregnancies. The mean labour duration for women seeking acupuncture was two hours shorter then women not receiving acupuncture.

The acupuncture treatments start at 36 weeks and are given once a week until labour commences. Clinical experience shows that this consistently increased the chance of women experiencing a natural labour.

Backyard Fun

So today I went out in the back with Kia and played frisbee and enjoyed the sun...of course, I took my camera - which has been gathering dust lately.  I forgot how much I missed and love taking photos...I will post the rest later...but wanted to leave tonight's updates with my favorite photo.  I love this one.  I'm strange, I know - but I think it's great!  I was sitting in my favorite spot on a piece of stone (where the bench will eventually be under our three big trees...once we get a bench!  haha) and she came and stood next to me on the pathway...I love those paws!

Freaks Me Out!

Well, as you can see, my belly button has reached its limit!  This is as 'popped' as it's capable of!  I think it is kinda freaky and gross and Trevor likes it and thinks it's cool.  Ugh, boys are so strange!  I noticed it actually showing through my shirt the other day and thought "are we really at this point?!".  I can't believe it!  I didn't think my little button was capable of any level of popping, but it has been getting more and more shallow as time has gone on...and now this is what I'm left with...

Belly Buttons are weird...I'm just saying!

Work is now a memory...

Well Friday marked my last day of work before Maternity Leave.  It was bitter sweet.  I'm ready to rest and be off and start this new adventure as I am very tired...but it was very weird cleaning out my space and changing over my email, voicemail, etc.  I can't believe the time has come!  I remember thinking about how far off in the future it really was!  But, it has in fact come...and it was nice to go out for lunch with some of the ladies from the office...I also greatly appreciated the card and gift certificate for Sweet Mama!  I can't wait to use it - I think I will use it to either pamper my very sore feet or my growing belly - those are the two options that I was looking into!  I will keep you posted as to what I will pick!  I don't think you can go wrong with Sweet Mama, so it was much appreciated!

Good Bye to the working girl - Hello Busy Mama!
Let the journey begin!
