A bit about Photography

I've been getting a lot of questions lately about how I do things!  It is funny to me as I was always so curious myself...and it's really surreal having people ask little ol' ME!  Some of the most popular questions I've had lately are:  What kind of camera do you use?  What programs do you edit with?  How do you watermark your photos?  Who builds your website?  How does a studio shoot compare to an outdoor shoot?

Well, I use a Canon 7D camera and LOVE it...minus it's weight.  It's heavy!  Kills my neck!  I started off with a Canon Rebel and that is the camera that got me hooked on taking photos!
I used to edit with Aperature...and have recently been schooling myself in Photoshop!  At first we weren't good friends, but we've grown to love each other.  I don't even touch photos in other programs other than Photoshop now.  That was something I thought I'd never be able to conquer.  And I am still learning...every day.
I watermark my photos in photoshop.  My darling husband actually created a 'brush' for me with a logo and I've never altered or changed it.  I just basically 'stamp' the photo with a brush.
Trevor and I built, alter, update, and change my website ourselves.  It's actually just a wordpress account that I've used and I find it very user friendly as I've been blogging for a bit now and it's quite similar.  I like that we only rely on ourselves and don't need to send away everytime we want a change to occur.
In terms of photo shoots...I will always prefer outdoors.  You cannot beat natural lighting and a natural setting.  It offers more variety to the shoot.  Outdoor shoots are FAR EASIER to edit photos from as well.  That being said, sometimes you just have to go with the studio!  I currently have two backgrounds, black and white - but am dying to expand my collection!  I favor black.  It is far more flattering (in my opinion) and I prefer black and white photos done with the black backdrop.  It is also more forgiving and easier to edit with, although still takes some work!   I find I either have to burn or paint the background to get the look I want.  I shoot with two studio lights and and am still learning on what the best placement and voltage to use is!  I'm ALWAYS learning! Often times I look at the SOTC (straight off the camera) shots from a studio shoot and think 'Delete'!  But I always play around with them to make adjustments.  Sometimes, I need to do very little as the lighting, angels, and pose made it all work...others need work!  When working with children (especially babies) I just keep shooting and use post-editing to get the look I want because if I were to stop each click and check the photo to make all the adjustments, chances are the moments have passed, babies are unhappy, or you won't get the same vibe you just had.  You can't pose special moments, you just have to be ready to capture them (that's how I think anyways).
Here is an example using a photo from this weekend...

You can see that their clothing isn't smooth and has lint and you can see a couple of the wrinkles in my backdrop.  Also, their skin tones aren't as smooth and complimenting as they could be.  Few people have that perfect glow!  I also find it far more 'dull' than it could be.
This is the first edit I always create.  The enhanced color version.  Not only to I make adjustment to the black, I enhance them...their skin is even and glows, their hair color pops and has a nice shine, etc.  Then I sharpen the image to crisp it up.  This is definitely noticed when clients print...they have nice clean, sharp images.
I then take that above photo and I convert it to black and white.  I sometimes need to make it 'lighter' or 'darker' depending on the image.
My new favorite look is a lightened color version of a photo.  I think it is so soft and pretty and is a nice compromise between full color and the nice impact of black and white.  I create this image from my black and white version.  I dial down the black and white until I get just the right amount of color I'm looking for.
Some of you may find this boring and some of you have been dying to know!  A lot of the questions lately have come from my 'friends' which is why I decided to post this here :)  Like I said, I am ALWAYS learning.  I am completely self-taught in all aspects of photography - and I don't hide that fact.  I am who I am.  I would love to take both a photography course and a photoshop course and maybe one day I will find the time and opportunity to squeeze those in!

A bit of this, A bit of that.

A smile for Dada after dropping him off at airport.
LOVES this new set of books I got him about different 'cars'.
I don't know what we did before our video monitor.  We LOVE staring at him, and it has saved us many a untimely trips into his bedroom that would have woken a sleeping babe who was just making noise.  It's a blessing!
Always a smile in the tub!
One for Dada too!
Scrubbin his hairs in the tubbers!

Hiding Spot!

He is adventurous.  He is always looking for something new to climb.  He wants to try different things.  He is not scared of much!  He did not want to get off of this shelf!

Sweet Smiles!

New Word :)

On Thursday when Trevor left he said to me, 'Do you think he will learn any new words while I'm gone?'  I said probably not...then three hours later in the waiting room at the chiropractor, Jackson pulls a fire truck out of the bin of toys and said 'Truck'.  I laughed!  I had bought him some small books about vehicles, tractors, etc, and he can't get enough of going through them.  He uses truck to label...TRUCKS!  And, it doesn't sound like a cuss!  Phew!  The next morning I got it on video for Trevor :)

Eyes Nose Head!

Jackson loves finding parts of the face, usually on us - but Auntie C caught a video of him using his own face for once!

Pumpkin Carving Time!

Yesterday we did our family pumpkin carving!  It was fun!  It really reminded me how much Jackson has changed since last year!  It was actually a lot of fun, but my favorite part is always enjoying the toasted pumpkin seeds after!  YUM YUM!

Supervising Dada!

 And the finished products!...
Kia's dog bone!
My favorite!  We did a car for Jackson because, well, he LOVES cars right now!  I think it's adorable!
I used a drill to write BOO, but I'm really bummed that the letters aren't the same size.
Trevor thinks he's so clever!  He did an iPumpkin!  What the heck is an iPumpkin!!?  He did it well though!
All ready to go!

Halloween Treats

Halloween is still a couple days away, but already our little boy is spoiled!  And with REALLY cool stuff!  We went to 'trick or treat' at my parents' work yesterday in costume because they left this morning for California.  Moose looooves his new treats - especially his BOOKS!  This boy is all about books.

The first thing Jackson said this morning when Trevor went in his room...

"Where's Papa?"

Try explaining to him that Papa is gone for a week!  Every time we got in the car today, Moose says "Papa?".  No Moosey, we aren't going to see Papa :(

Missing from this picture is a Halloween CD he also got!  It's missing because it was immediately loaded into the car on the way home yesterday :)

Tub Fun

Trevor has been itching to get Moose in the hot tub the past couple days, so he cooled the temperature down and today was the day.  This boy would live in water if we let him.  He has a shower with one of us in the morning, he has his bath at night, and he looks for water the rest of the day!

Pumpkin of Treats

Auntie Nicole may be (star light, star bright, I wish I may...!) moving to Langdale!  We were really excited to go check out the duplexes tonight and it ended up turning into a dinner with her parents too - as they were eager to have a little visit with Moose!  They spoiled him!  This boy is just too darn loved!  Thank you for the treats and the visit!

This was by far the hit of the bucket!  It's a really cool flashlight that you can put different pieces (with different pictures) on the end of it and it shows up as a bat, pumpkin, ghost, etc.  He loved this and it was fun for all of us to play with!

Thank You Again :)

Bowling Fun

When we were at Grandma & 'Papa's house on the weekend, dad and Moose played a game of bowling; only Jackson didn't like the pins falling down and felt the need to pick them back up after the ball crashed.  I would have thought it was the other way around!

Tractor Time

Last night we went out to Grandma and 'Papa's for some dinner and visit.  That, and we hear Papa so many times a day that you feel like you have to make it happen for little Moose!  Sheesh!

As always, Moose got is tractor ride.  The MAJOR thing he remembers.  He knows where that tractor 'lives' and is determined to pay it a visit.
